Hosepipe ban starts in west Wales for 33,000 properties

Welsh Water will introduce a hosepipe ban from 10:00 BST on Sunday, July 19, affecting about 33,000 properties in west Wales, including Llanon, Llangwyryfon and Cwm Ystwyth in Ceredigion, Crymych, Llanfyrnach and Nevern in north Pembrokeshire, and Farmers, Pencader and Hermon in north Carmarthenshire. The company said the move follows several weeks of "exceptionally high demand" with roughly one billion litres of drinking water put into supply each day over the past week, about 20% more than expected for this time of year. Welsh Water framed the temporary restrictions as necessary to help protect essential supplies and warned they will remain only as long as demand does not return to sustainable levels. Kit Wilson, Welsh Water's chief customer officer, said implementing the ban had "not been an easy decision" and urged customers to reduce non-essential use. Under the Water Industry Act, water companies can fine people up to £1,000 for violating a hosepipe ban. Local farmer Gavin Young of Pen-y-Waun Farm near Llanedi said the dry weather is already stressing livestock and may force supplementary feeding within 10 to 14 days if grass growth does not recover. Welsh Water advised customers to check whether their property is affected on its website and said growing numbers of holiday-makers are expected to add further pressure on supplies.
