The Food and Drug Administration said July 18 that a sample of shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico tested positive for cyclospora. The FDA said the contaminated sample was collected through targeted import surveillance and is not part of Taylor Farms de Mexico's voluntary recall announced July 17; the positive lot is being detained while investigators trace whether any of that lot reached commerce or consumers. The agency’s traceback linked shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia to the outbreak, prompting Taylor Farms to remove all iceberg lettuce sourced in central Mexico from the U.S. market. Walmart and Taylor Fresh Foods have recalled certain Marketside-brand bagged lettuce with Best If Used By dates from July 18 through August 3, 2026, and customers were advised not to eat those products. Federal officials say the outbreak has sickened people in 34 states, and Michigan reported more than 5,000 cases and 102 hospitalizations as of July 16. The FDA said it will release additional information as its investigation and tracing continue.

The United States is on track to have more cyclospora cases in 2026 than in any previous year. The agency said it was investigating more than 5,100 additional illnesses that may have been caused by the parasite, which is transmitted through food or water contaminated with feces.

On Thursday evening, Taylor Farms executives met with the White House and the Food and Drug Administration to try to distance the company from the outbreak and air concerns about the official investigations into the outbreak.
