The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's new epic
Hollywood Reporter projects the box office opening weekend of The Odyssey at $257 million globally.
We all know he has no taste, just look at the CyberTruck.
I saw the Odyssey on Friday. I don't understand what is woke about it. Is it because they cast a black actress to play Helen of Troy? Is that it?
As if Elon Musk ever read Homer...
The Classical Greeks would have considered Elmo to be a barbarian.
Someone should fix Leon's logo with one of his rockets blowing up. That's worth more than 257 million I would think
Guy who stood next to Trump wearing a “Trump was right about everything” hat is going to lecture us all on groveling
BREAKING: Pathetic Trillionaire Is Sad a Billionaire More Popular Than Him Cast a Black Woman In His Movie
"Any Shakespeare play or movie adaptation that doesn't have all its female characters played by men dressed as women desecrates the Bard just to meet the woke rules." (Also--I'd bet a fair amount that Elon has never read the Odyssey or the Iliad.)
Citizen keyboard vigilante takes another massive posting L
Elon Musk's review of Hamilton must have been wild.
This is all so weird because it’s not like the Odyssey is a big part of being a man or modern whiteness. There’s no seminal Hollywood version he’s wokifying. You have to be very deep in conservative culture for any of this to make sense.
Dear world, you understood the assignment. Thank you.
How the hell did anyone ever think he was Tony Stark?
The Odyssey is pulling $260 million this weekend, well on its way to becoming the biggest movie of the year. It has a 95%/97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Everyone loves it. Please enjoy this exchange.
It’s very funny that Elon Musk of all people is complaining about manipulating public opinion to boost the financial value of a dodgy product
It’s so wild that the richest man is the nastiest, pettiest, most divorced unhappiest guy I can think of. His kids hate him. He hasn’t created one single public good. He killed millions for fun and profit
Setting aside the obvious for a moment… Can we also note how sad it is that we have actual “movie influencers?”
97% *with* negative review bombing. I checked last night and like the thirty most recent audience reviews were 1/2 to 1 star with vague wording like “terrible, walked out”. All the same.
This will morph into: Imagine how much money they would have made if they had allowed influencer screenings. The thread of grievance will never be broken. It just goes on.
aw. did he opt to invite people who might actually be movie critics and didn't invite online trolls? imagine that. great example of how to manage the release.
the other good news to read into this is how rapidly twitter is losing affect on or touch with normie opinions, which was musk's only reason for buying the site
These same people hailed Citizen Vigilante as a resounding success earlier this month
As a “movie influencer,” this is not something that happens lol. For better and worse, YouTubers don’t get screeners for blockbusters because we are not considered real critics. Influencer marketing is something you do when you’re trying to build a grassroots audience for an underdog, 1/2
Hallo media die denken dat X de echte wereld is en dat daar de agenda wordt bepaald.
The Odyssey has now made more $ than elon has lost since the spacex IPO.
Alle fascistfluencers wisten zeker dat The Odyssey zou gaan floppen. Film heeft alleen in het opening weekend al ruim meer dan het productiebudget opgehaald, krijgt alom acclaim en beoordelingscijfers worden alleen maar gunstiger 🤭😉
"Nolan refused to screen the movie to influencers"
Looking forward to future videogames taking a similar approach.
we gotta start calling these guys weirdo freaks again
When reality is proving you’re an absolute pack of dorks and losers, just retreat to the imaginary world of X and bask in the Hitler particles and pretend that it’s just the LaMeStReAm MeDiA LiEs.
Batman fans who hounded Nolan about Batman actually knew a lot about Batman. The people yelling about the Odyssey think it's about Hercules entering an arm wrestling match to win a night with Helen, Queen of Rome.
really funny for MAGA chuds to be soiling themselves over “historical” accuracy when any attempt to faithfully adapt The Odyssey would result in some sort of demented Twin Peaks Season 3-esque art film that would go on for 10 hours
Also, Nolan was right to disregard the people who knew a lot about Batman.
CLASSICS PROFESSOR: Odysseus was the... uhh... Batman of the Epic Cycle.
Matt Damon should have spoken in an incomprehensible growl every time he put on his helmet.
Are the iliad and the odyssey not just stories. Not that they're based on history at the time but weren't they just made up out of whole cloth ? Or were they loosely based on stuff ?
The Odyssey was one of the best theater going experiences I've ever had. Seeing people who had never read the poem react to The Dead, Circe, Scylla and Charybdis was special. The changes Nolan made worked for the story he wanted to tell. Fidelity to an original story would have perplexed the Greeks
Okay, but that is spiritually the plot of about 60 percent of peplum films, so you can see why I'm trying to get folks to watch Hercules Unchained (1959) and the like.
Aeneas doesn't even show up!
Their ideas of Greek culture are informed by this
These are the same people who think a 'literal' interpretation of the Bible means believing that the whore of Babylon represents the United Nations or some such.
I LOVED the last 8000 minutes of the Odyssey. But the first 20 minutes were like the Dark Knight Boat Scene, if it was taught to screenwriters as the required template for all scripts
The funny thing is, the chuds hate this version of the Odyssey because Nolan cast trans and non-white actors but if they actually were media literate, they'd hate this version of the Odyssey because it adopts their civilizational frame and then violently rejects *them* and their ideology.
Like, thematically, Nolan is using the Odyssey to almost speak *as* 'western civilization' and then what he says is, "you men (very much *men*), with your violent inhospitality, your greed and appetites are what has destroyed civilization by breaking the bonds between people."
Right? Me: ohhh, the Warfighter Mentality is destroying civilization and Odysseus has PTSD because his clever warfighting led to absolute barbarism.
I watched it yesterday and I know that Odysseus is depicted as understanding that rejection, but does he (or anyone else) ever realize or say, "WE are the Sea People"?
I just saw it today. I've lost respect for anyone with any criticism of this movie whatsoever. Did you see it? No: then, go see it. Yes: you don't recognize or understand art. This movie is so timely- not in a "liberal" way- but, in a human way.
That ideology was rejected explicitly and repeatedly in the conclusion of the iliad
Nolan’s depiction of Ithaca is a “civilization in decay,” but not in the way fascists use this concept. It asks what happens to a society that abandons its higher principles in favor of chauvinism and spiteful self interest. Fascism IS the decay.
1) the first thing I thought when I left the theater was that this was one of most political films I've ever seen 2) there is good reason for musk et al to fear this movie, they're just too stupid to recognize what it actually is
One interesting thing about this controversy is that there's nothing stopping all these whiners from making their own adaptation of The Odyssey. (thread)
Elon Musk could cut a check right now for a big budget adaptation produced exactly to his liking. He could hire the director and writer and crew he wants. He could cast whomever he wants. He could easily bankroll a film that's faithful to his aesthetics and woeful understanding of literature.
Isn't The Odyssey one of the most adapted works in history?
And yet they are totally cool with white Jesus.
18 and I were talking about the feigned outrage, and I said: "2 options: don't see it or make your own movie." He replied: "Ya... I don't get it. It's a movie, and every movie takes the directors vision of things."
When I was involved in Orange County Republican youth activism I avidly read James Burnham, Frank Meyer, Whittaker Chambers. This radical branch of American conservatism, filled with ex-Trotskyists, have been complaining about “the left’s hold on culture” since late 1940s. They’re still complaining.
Because none of them actually have friends. This is as close as they can get.
It’s so funny that conservatives hated The Odyssey because a Black woman and trans man were cast in it cause it’s kinda made for them. Focus on traditional masculinity, civilization falling because of men’s moral failings, excellent foreigners, women as vengeful, liars, witches and wives.
Technically amazing movie, but boy does Nolan’s fear of anarchism show the most here. Not only that, while I love seeing Elliot cast as a cis man warrior, it feels a tad… let’s say bioessentially stereotypical that he plays the innocent young boy who dies pure and must be avenged.
After having seen it twice, I realize it’s basically about Matt Damon leaving his wife Anne Hathaway to go on a business trip where he ends up having an affair with Charlize Thereon.
It reminds me of how conservatives completely ignored Egger's The Northman even though it’s the Viking fantasy they all long for and is an excellent, wonderful movie. Conclusion: Conservatives don’t like good movies, they prefer trash like Citizen Vigilante 🤮
Getting mad that a mythical character, an egg hatched result of the union between princess and swan, isn't played by a white person, seems a cry for help.
I hate when they do this with directors I don't like, because I also don't wanna get into why I don't like Nolan, but I have to or I look like some conservative asshole. I fundamentally disagree with his philosophy of filmmaking! But I also want you to go like what you like!
That movie was filmed in Western Sahara, in territories stolen by Morocco from the saharawi population. It's a legitimation of colonialism and forced displacement of colonized populations.
Its why I laugh everytime someone is like make stuff more for them! They hate everything! You cant make art for fash because they’ll ways come around to calling it degenerate.
The funniest aspect of the right wing crack up about this movie is thematically it is about a limiting, superstitious, hierarchical yet still morally obligated form of conservatism being displaced by, effectively, neocon violent solipsism. It’s lamenting a flawed conservatism displaced by pure id
Digging into themes and concepts takes too long for the outrage cycle. Screaming about casting is something they can do immediately without having to see the movie or have any media literacy.
‘The Odyssey’ debuts with $264.1M at the global box office 💰 • The biggest opening ever for a Christopher Nolan film • Production budget was $250M
Now all the people who thought it was gonna flop now look like a bunch of clowns now
but every grifting moron on youtube that posted videos for months leading up to it's release whining incessantly about casting said the movie was in trouble and could be a flop.
be sure to do a wellness check your local incel clown
Anybody checked in on Elon? I hope he’s having a meltdown of the highest order.
B-but movie fail cause I say so…🥲
Gonna see it tonight at 6p!! LFG
Hollywood is going to take the wrong lesson from this and we're going to get a decade of awful sword and sandal movies.
>Nolan's highest rated movie ever >Biggest opening for him surpassing all of his Batmans >Already made over its massive production budget back >Pretty much set to pass Project Hail Mary as the biggest non-sequel/biopic of the year But Black Woman being in was guaranteeing it disaster, right Elon?
I’m gonna wait and watch it as god intended
Well, well, well. The "go woke, go broke" people are awfully silent right now 🙂
"People" are shocked this did well like certain other "people" will be shocked another movie will do insanely well in December. Stay tuned.
So much of these online reactionaries’ saying “go woke, go broke” until their expectations were proven wrong after hearing this, including Muskrat himself.
I knew The Odyssey would shatter box office predictions. Worthy! "gO wOkE gO bRoKe" my ASS Go see it on the biggest screen you can find. It's an unbelievable movie.
Elon Musk, Nerdrotic, Critical Drinker and other woke scolds right now:
Just out Without giving away too much. It's a post Inception Christopher Nolan film with all the good things and bad things that come along with that The set pieces were really great. He needs an editor and still can't write dialogue. One of the few films, where the middle is the best bit.
I haven't seen the movie yet, and I do think there is absolutely valid criticism being said about it, but this is a very nice reminder that dead internet manufactured culture war propaganda slop doesn't fucking matter or reflect reality in the slightest. Take a breather.
Oppenheimer and The Odyssey are movies about men feeling guilt and shame over their life's crowning achievement bringing untold suffering into the world clearly this is an expression of Christopher Nolan's guilt for popularizing superhero movies with The Dark Knight
Someone argued that Oppenheimer is an allegory in which Oppenheimer is Nolan and the bomb is The Dark Knight and the end of the world is the end of cinema.
Nolan watching Bvs dawn of justice:
I think like Tobey Spiderman was the beginning of the modern superhero pox
Good sir, I think you found the only reasonable take that could make one not want to see the Odyssey.
“Superhero movies can be good”
this is also every other movie he’s made except possibly dunkirk
Just saw The Odyssey. It was super disappointing. Most of the actors were white dudes and it ended up being a normie, hetero love story. I was told it was Woke Propaganda, but turns out it’s just an ancient classic of western civilization.
All joking aside, it rocked and was incredibly fun to see in theaters. I am curious about whether the theme Nolan landed on is entirely anachronistic, or if there is a textual basis for his interpretation (which I enjoyed). It’s certainly very different than what I remembered from college.
I wonder if that was the marketing angle. The paid people on social media to say it was woke just to get you to the theater.
directed by a union leader!
Yeah. A bunch Yankee accents. Couldn’t even make their voices sound halfway Greek. Was Nia Vardolos not available?
Barely even that. Beautifully filmed but disappointing script, terrible casting (aside from Lupita who was totally fine), and lame reliance on flashbacks.
bad dialogue writing. bad acting by many principle... from flat to outright bad. Sound was excessively loud (ear damage loud). Music was brilliant.
also, to state that Nolan is departing his usual films about moral futility by making the Odyssey means the reviewer has either never read Homer, or never understood the internal conflict at the heart of it.
Armand White (who I think is the author) absolutely knows movies and the classics, he's just involved in a decades long art project/grift of being the most incorrect reviewer for fun and profit
Right? If moral futility is Nolan's recurring theme, he couldn't have picked a better story than this one.
