Argentina players shown red cards after World Cup final incidents

sportsJul 20, 2026454,212

Leandro Paredes received a straight red card after the final whistle of Argentina's World Cup final loss to Spain when he rushed toward Spain's Eric Garcia and violently put an open hand to Garcia's throat, knocking him to the ground. The incident occurred at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, in front of assistant referee Tomaž Klančnik and Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, and Paredes also shoved Spain midfielder Gavi during the ensuing melee. The action set off a large brawl between the teams and earned Paredes the red card after the confrontation. Earlier near the end of regulation, Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim its second World Cup title. FIFA's disciplinary committee is expected to review Paredes's conduct, and he is likely to face a suspension longer than the automatic one-match ban for a red card.

I often make the comparison between soccer and rugby but here’s another instance. Just try this on a rugby field and you’re on a 10 game ban or longer, and probably your body parts get rearranged the first game you’re back unless you’re Eben Etzebeth.

it must suck being a casual/rational argentina fan rn. you get lumped in with the hardcore racist fans, the whole world at this point thinks your team are a bunch of cheating nazis, you get to the final and put up an absolute stinker of a game and finally this

To be clear, this man should be tried and convicted of felony assault, jailed, and not returned to Argentina until his time has been served. That can be seven years in New York.

I started the game rooting for Spain but not overly so. By extra time I was viewing the match as an existential battle between good and evil.
