Aston Villa have signed Brazil midfielder João Gomes from Wolves for a reported £38m, an initial £34m plus £4m in add-ons, and have given the 25-year-old a five-year contract. Gomes left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal to have a medical before finalising the move; Atletico Madrid had shown interest. Villa moved after midfielder Amadou Onana suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury with Belgium, leaving a midfield gap compounded by the sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m and Morgan Rogers being set to leave after a £117m agreement with Chelsea. Gomes made 41 appearances for Wolves last season, was named the club’s Player of the Year as they finished bottom of the Premier League, and played 130 times for Wolves after joining from Flamengo in 2023. He registered the third most tackles in the Premier League last season with 107 and the fourth highest ball recoveries with 194, and has 116 Premier League appearances across three and a half years at Molineux. Wolves technical director Matt Jackson praised Gomes as a model professional who will become an outstanding player, and Villa say Gomes brings Premier League experience and the combative profile Unai Emery wants as they balance spending under Premier League and UEFA financial rules.
