Hungary's PM nominates Judit Polgár for presidency

sportsJul 20, 202625854

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced he will offer chess grandmaster Judit Polgár the presidency and will meet her tomorrow to ask whether she is prepared to serve until the adoption of a new constitution. Magyar first posted the news on his official Facebook page and said Polgár was nominated today by respected figures in Hungarian public life. Polgár is widely regarded as the most successful female chess player in history, having led the women’s world rankings continuously for 26 years, reached the overall world top ten, and won five Chess Olympiads. She is an international grandmaster, a recipient of the Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen, was recently featured in the documentary The Queen of Chess, and was elected a member of Christ’s College at the University of Cambridge a few weeks ago. Reuters and other outlets have reported and confirmed Magyar’s announcement. The offer follows a constitutional amendment signed by President Tamás Sulyok that ends his term as head of state and creates the vacancy Magyar seeks to fill.
