Angela Rayner returns as Housing Secretary

newsJul 20, 202625606

Angela Rayner has returned as secretary of state for the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government after Andy Burnham became prime minister. Communities secretary Steve Reed announced his departure from government this afternoon as part of Burnham’s reshaped cabinet. Rayner previously held the role until resigning in September after it was found she breached the ministerial code over failure to pay sufficient stamp duty on the purchase of a flat. MHCLG accounts published last week show Rayner received almost £17,000 in severance for leaving the role. Burnham’s early cabinet also names Yvette Cooper as health and social care secretary, John Healey as chancellor, and Lucy Powell as education secretary.

Great to see Angela Rayner back as housing sec - a role that will have greater weight under Burnham and a quicker rehabilitation than expected. I feel for Bridget Phillipson, sacked from education. Fiercely smart and little interest in in-fighting, she performed miracles getting Send reform through
