Xbox brings original Xbox backward compatibility to PC

gamingJul 22, 2026453,162

Xbox launched XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC in an early release today, making four original Xbox games playable on PC and supported handhelds including the ROG XBOX Ally and XBOX Ally X. The initial four titles listed in Xbox posts are BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy; each is available to buy on PC and is included with all XBOX Game Pass plans. If you already own a digital license for these games on console, that license now carries over to PC and handheld via XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming. Microsoft added PC-specific enhancements while preserving original gameplay, such as up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and customizable language and audio settings. The first four games will receive Achievements in the coming months, and Xbox says it will add more original Xbox titles to PC over time as part of a preservation effort. Players with compatible PCs or handhelds can access the backward compatible titles through the XBOX on PC app starting today in supported regions.

This is so neat. It'd be really nice if I could use my original discs,,, (delusional)

Who needs studios de dev when you peut avoir Crimson Skies High Road To Revenge ?

Joe Fielder5

My vote would be for Catan and Carcassonne, despite the unlikelihood of either happening.

i deltaruned my today5

conker was skinned alive for this by the way

Crashy News4

There are 4 Crash games on the original Xbox, 2 on the Xbox 360, and none of them have even come out for the BC program on the Xbox consoles. Do you reckon this will even come to fruition with this announcement?

fuzion frenzy WOW i wouldn't have committed to that xbox boycott had i known that i could be playing the beloved smash hit fuzion frenzy in the year 2026. everyone i know has been demanding a pc port of fuzion frenzy

Including Blinx here is very apt because it's the old Xbox game that larpers speak highly about but never actually played. If they had played it they would know it was middling wankery. So of course it's included in the first wave of PC back compat games from this Xbox leadership.

#blutoid xbox has leveraged play anywhere in its console exit strategy to encourage people to keep buying games knowing they're playable on PC, but I'm genuinely surprised they're doing this. Guess we'll see if this will get long term support or if it's just an empty gesture.

something something linux user something jingling keys something something something locked to microsoft store

Welp. Guess the rumors were right. Sort of. We'll have to wait until Project Helix gets properly unveiled to see if any of this will bear fruit, but if this results in Rare Replay coming to PC, that might push me into finally upgrading to Windows 11. #blutoid

Time between ruthlessly laying off the person who did the work & Xbox claiming that work as a forward-looking team victory: 14 days. www.gamespot.com/articles/xbo...

BIG Xbox news, Microsoft are still ghouls that you shouldn't give money to, and you can buy / softmod an old Xbox for pretty cheap anyway. It's still one of the cheapest retro consoles to collect games for too, if that's your jam.

I wish I could be happier about this. I would normally love this kind of thing. But to announce massive layoffs just a few weeks ago and then try to use nostalgia as a way to bring some good will back their way is just a shitty thing to do.

Gamers please ignore our layoffs type move

This is not a callout of Tom, writing in the game space now sucks and is reliant on clicks, but it's wild to me that MS thinks they can make a splash with Xbox emulation on PC, as if this isn't something fans and communities have been doing for years and years.

this is some of the limpest key jingling I've ever seen no one is going to look past xbox's problems because they can finally play fuzion frenzy

Hellrazor Ramon3

This is not "backwards compatibility" unless you can stick the Xbox disc in your PC and play it. This is a port. Four 25 year old Xbox games have been ported to PC. Woopty doo.

DocBray Is Tired, Boss3

You fired the dude who made backwards compat on xbox a fucking thing, you absolute disgusting meatwads

Kevin3

For every 1000 employees Xbox lays off, you get 1 BC game on PC.

KevFun Newburn3

Interesting that it says you need Windows 11 in the release. I wonder if that's accurate. I love Crimson Skies and all, but there's no way I'm upgrading from Windows 10 just for a 20 year old Xbox game I can already play on my 360.

A lot of folks like to think of the original Xbox as like the successor to the Dreamcast, but you know, they put Virtua Fighter 4 on the PS2. And Super Monkey Ball on the GameCube, which is the most Dreamcast-ass Dreamcast game on the GameCube.
