Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) on Wednesday erupted at U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, yelling that Waltz "should resign" after Waltz failed to give accurate answers about U.S. troop casualties. Lieu accused Waltz of not knowing how many U.S. troops were wounded, saying Waltz "gave false information to Congress" and that troops in Jordan were "exposed" to Iranian missile and drone strikes. Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) pushed back, urging civility and noting Waltz's 27-year military service. The exchange came as the Iran conflict has reignited, with three U.S. service members killed at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan and a fourth killed during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone at Erbil Air Base, raising the U.S. death toll to 17. The Defense Department said nearly 100 troops have been injured since strikes resumed on July 7, with 96 percent returning to duty. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified earlier this week that the U.S. has spent $37.5 billion so far and requested a $67 billion package to replenish stockpiles and advance administration priorities. President Trump attended the dignified transfer for the four service members at Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday.
