Only nine Canadian cinemas can show Nolan’s The Odyssey in original 70‑mm IMAX

Christopher Nolan’s nearly three-hour epic The Odyssey was shot entirely on 70-mm IMAX film, and only nine theatres in Canada can project it in that original format. Halifax’s Scotiabank Theatre restarted an IMAX film projector that had been dormant since 2012, when it last ran Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, to screen The Odyssey. The film is the first in history to be shot entirely using 70-mm IMAX, and 41 theatres worldwide are showing that film print rather than the standard digital projection. Massive ticket sales for Halifax IMAX screenings prompted Cineplex to add a 10:50 p.m. weekday showtime, and the chain said demand for premium formats is growing and it will continue offering 70-mm IMAX when available. The Odyssey opened to just over $264 million worldwide and features Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Elliot Page. Halifax attendees and theatre staff described the 70-mm presentation as a rare, film-centric experience that revived projectionist-era practices and excitement.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

The Odyssey has the potential to be a culture war turning point loss for the Right partially because I really don’t think Christopher Nolan has any desire to be a ‘woke’ director. He literally just wanted to make a massive movie with the best actors he could find
