Xbox tests free ad-supported cloud gaming with Insiders

gamingJul 23, 202638276

Microsoft has begun testing a free, ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming tier with Xbox Insiders, letting Insiders stream games they already own for limited, one-hour sessions. Ads will play only before sessions begin, and Microsoft says the ad-supported option is optional for players who keep a paid cloud gaming subscription. The company frames the test as limited in time during a "test period"; The Verge reported Microsoft began internal tests late last year that included about two minutes of preroll ads. Microsoft recently raised Game Pass prices while adding unlimited cloud gaming to the Game Pass Essential tier priced at $9.99 per month. Xbox says the test aims to expand affordable ways to play and notes cloud streaming can let Xbox One owners play games built for Xbox Series X and S without new hardware. The announcement arrives as Xbox faces layoffs, studio closures, a renewed focus on the Fallout franchise, and planned Xbox console price increases starting August 1.

See, THIS is why so many people just stick with Nintendo. Yes, obvs they also have some out-of-touch higher ups doing questionable, frustrating things at times. Annoying stuff that eventually subsides. Microsoft and Sony's worst blunders genuinely endanger the art form, and they *stay* with us.

Making it so you have to deal with ads to stream games you already own after your competitor said they're gonna kill off physical games in favor of digital purchases while we're in the midst of a ridiculous data storage price hike feels so maliciously intentional for where all this is going

i told you people to never trust microsoft back when the first xbox came out

This sure reads like something that isn't supposed to be customer facing. But companies don't even care about that now they just go ahead and make their press release aimed at investors.

if i'm going to be fed ads in games at least let it be through billboards while i'm crosschecking skiiers off of grind rails to OK Go

It's insane how frequently the gaming industry shows it's all just a dogfight to the bottom the winner is whoever has the most foot left after running out of bullets

when i die for the 20th time in a game and now i gotta hear "whopper whopper whopper whopper" so i genuinely start tweaking

So maybe I'm not understanding this but... If I own the game, why would I need to stream it? If I own it, why am I being interrupted by ads? Are they taking away the ability to download a game and saying that anything owned has to be streamed now? This makes no sense and is fucking horrid.
