The Odyssey draws IMAX demand as Nolan's epic opens

A rare IMAX 70mm projector that failed during opening weekend of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is back in service at the Regal UA Colorado Center, which resumed selling tickets for IMAX 70mm screenings Thursday evening. Colorado hosts two of the roughly 25 IMAX 70mm-equipped theaters in the United States, and both reportedly malfunctioned last weekend, frustrating Front Range moviegoers. Social posts show patrons seeing the 70mm presentation Thursday afternoon, and Thursday screenings were already close to sold out. Cinemark Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs also offers IMAX 70mm showings of The Odyssey. Ticket prices for the 70mm IMAX screenings start at about $25 per seat.

Nolan's Odyssey is recognizably an adaptation of Homer's epic, featuring all the stuff you half remember from having read the poem in high school, things like the Cyclops, the Sirens, and the witch Circe. But it's also unmistakably a Christopher Nolan film, and he has taken the material and warped it to his own ends, namely a single question: Once you've set the world on fire, can the inferno ever be put out?

Nolan does not. however, reiect civilization itself. Nolan has his critiques for this society, to be sure: Penelope points out the inherent unfairness that despite having ruled Ithaca for 20 years, as a woman she cannot be its official ruler and is instead pressured to find a husband, while Nolan inserts a critique of wealth by having the rich and contemptible suitor Antinous use his wealth to avoid the Trojan War at the cost of the poor and genuine Sinon. However, civilization itself is represented as a positive good, the decline of which is a catastrophe. The war and the suitors disrupt a society on Ithaca that is presented as largely wholesome and good, while Odysseus himself is quick to represent writing and song as arts that preserve wisdom by preserving the memory of past mistakes. The result is a fundamentally conservative, almost Burkean critique: Whatever structural problems society has, its catastrophic collapse comes not from those structural issues but from the violation of long standing norms of behavior. Odysseus's horse breached not only Troy's gates, but also Chesterton's fence. Nolan's The Odyssey, like the original poem, is self-conscious of its role in culture, opening with a bard beginning to sing the story of Odvsseus in his own hall. Nolan thus levies a conservative critique of the current moment by using Homer's story to position himself as speaking for Western civilization and the Western literary canon itself

4. The Chariot Is this what you want? The blood death? The moment a man ceases, his tongue caught between his teeth? I’m just reporting back. Then take the fox to the henhouse, the lurcher to the hare. The dissolution of the spirit is the same, a black wind down to hell. Ten years has made masters of us. Eyes flickering to meet in the dark and nothing at all needs to be said. We simply are. The body automata. Is that what we’re supposed to revere about our heroes? The tragic and the animal? If it’s making you sick then stop. All stories are wet clay, all of us are bodies snapping to attention at the sound of our names. I don’t know how. If the muse doesn’t come, then lie. If the muse arrives let her spirit ring you round. And speak. You kill them. Sleeping men. Their king whom they loved. (And then we stole the horses.)
