Johnny Depp surprises SDCC as Ebenezer Scrooge, trailer debuts

moviesJul 24, 202645617

Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in full Ebenezer Scrooge makeup, hobbling onstage in Hall H with a candle and delivering lines including "I’m speaking into the candle" and "Have you no lives? No responsibilities?" The event served as the premiere for the first trailer for Ebenezer, Ti West’s holiday film adaptation released in the trailer as coming to theaters November 13. The trailer presents a dark gothic tone likened to Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd and frames Depp’s Scrooge with comic and horror-tinged moments, including a sequence of him sinking into a bed and throwing snowballs. Opening credits in the trailer explicitly reference Depp’s past screen alter egos such as Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands, and Depp’s character directly tells the camera, "It’s good to be back." Nathaniel Halpern adapted the Charles Dickens story and the cast shown in the trailer includes Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin and Daisy Ridley. Collider’s Directors on Directing panel in Hall H hosted the surprise trailer reveal after Depp’s Gaslamp district appearance earlier that day.

"The name you know. The story you don't."-- the trailer for TI West's EBENEZER, which as the poster released earlier today indicates, has lost the "A Christmas Carol" that was part of the title when announced last fall. This is David Ellison's Paramount Pictures! www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7ly...

Seeing Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp shameless mug in old age makeup in consecutive weeks makes you understand why audiences chose to watch a movie where Chiwetel Ejiofor loses his mind wandering empty hallways this summer.

Yes, we do know the story! What are you people talking about? It's one of the most famous stories in the English language.

This looks *horrifyingly* bad and reinforces my impression that someone (Ti West maybe) never actually watched any previous versions of A Christmas Carol and believes the original was told from Bob Cratchit's perspective or something, making this a gritty reimagining as told from the villain's POV.

It's giving Amazon's "Elle." I'm seriously deliberating which limbs or digits I would sacrifice to avoid watching this movie. Like... Would I sacrifice one baby toe to not have to see "Ebenezer"? Absolutely.

Also, they're trying to brand Depp as "the master of misfits." I mean, that's one way of thinking of him, I suppose....

I'm delighted this isn't called "A Christmas Carol" because it means I'm less likely to accidentally stumble upon it when I browse for a version of A Christmas Carol to put on every year.

Well, this looks like garbage.

We all know the story, tho

This is embarrassing in so many ways that I am actually feeling secondhand shame.

This movie seems time displaced, it would have done numbers in like 2009 but now it just seems extremely weird.
