Ebenezer is proof that Johnny Depp shifting into the "quirky guy" after Jack Sparrow was never his strong suit, because they all tried and failed to replicate Jack Sparrow. Compare it to Jim Carrey who's entire career he's the been the master at it. Depp can't really pull it off outside of one role

Til' then, Carrey plays it straight, the humor coming more for his talent to improvise mean comments and insults that feel like an old ass. Here Deep plays it more like Carrey's Grinch.

He has some exaggerated faces and slapstick too, but for a lot of the time, he plays the role completely straight with the occasional improv. But Depp overacts to a degree that even Carrey's Grinch would say is too much.
