Johnny Depp surprises SDCC as Ebenezer Scrooge, trailer debuts
just to reiterate: this is is actually some more stupid than it looks, in that they haven't made a christmas carol prequel starring johnny depp and promoted it like this. they've made a normal christmas carol movie starring johnny depp and promoted it like this.
i dunno who the audience for a christmas carol movie starring johnny depp actually is. people with head injuries?
choosing to see this as johnny depp waging a cultural war against the muppets
Pretty sure he became both Ebenezer and Scrooge at the same time. I suppose you could even make the argument that he had the name Scrooge at birth and then officially named Ebenezer at some point AFTER being born. So 'aktually' he was Scrooge BEFORE he was Ebenezer.
Thought it must have been that. What an asinine tagline. Should have gone with 'SCROOGE doesn't have friends, but if he did they'd call him...'
I can't wait to see yet another Depp film where he performs a shitty english accent.
It's not even a prequel. Just a quel.
An origin story for a character whose origin story was told in full as a crucial part of the book. Good, good. Johnny Depp in A Tale Of Two Cities. This time we include Paris! Johnny Depp in Hamlet. Let's talk about his mother for once
Also hang the fuck on, Johnny Depp has to be about 60 by now. In what way can he meaningfully play "before Scrooge", blokey's been capitalist-bastarding for like 40 years.
Someone on here commented yesterday that casting Depp as an asshole who learns his lesson and becomes a better person is extremely ironic.
Can’t believe Johnny Depp is playing Ebenezer Goode. Still, it’ll be interesting to see the character’s origin story, and find out how he got so naughty.
Now Joel, he's very much maligned and misunderstood.
At least we should find out if anybody does in fact have any Veras.
Scene 1: the camera rises gently above the smoky rooftops of Victorian London at dawn. Sound effects: birdsong, hooves on cobblestones, Bow Bell tolling in the distance. Voiceover: (Morgan Freeman) "A great philosopher once said..."
Sorry, but he'll never beat the magic of the classic Sadowitz performance. "You boy! Yer a wee cunt!"
I think it's because he was very much maligned and misunderstood
by the normal rules of narrative, I think it will turn out that at some point he *was* abused, you know.
So, THIS is exactly what I was talking about re: Ellison being a Twitter-brained exec and that being more of a problem than whatever his politics might be. "We NEED to be the Johnny Depp comeback studio!" is a call you make if you think your Twitter feed is real life.
Say again: If Ellison sincerely wanted to pivot/expand to a center-right Boomer/GenX audience because he thinks it's undeserved and there's money there? That's NOT a bad *business* instinct. But if that was his goal, he wouldn't have lost Taylor Sheridan to NBCU - which he did...
Johnny Depp??? Was Jared Leto unavailable?
So he's trying to play half Jack Sparrow/half his generic Tim Burton character with a director who's neither Gore Verbinski nor Tim Burton? No, this is gonna be bad.
heck, he wants to hire brett (epstein files/melania doc) ratner. i once believe he's smart enough to keep gunn there. now i'm not so sure.
Johnny Depp playing Scrooge makes sense in a meta contextual sense. What doesn't make sense to me is the Ti West piece of it. Wouldn't have pegged him as a 2000s Burton-lite stand-in director, but maybe he's not above a paycheck gig like this, I don't know the man lol
I thought it was some kind of AI joke when I saw the poster. What weird casting. But I think Ti West is good, so I am curious. It is just weird that he is working with Depp. I am guessing Mia Goth will be the Spirit of Christmas past?
I am intrigued by the new Avatar series.... ....but Ebenezer gave me some disease from exposure to Johnny Depp.
It is a little sad that after everything Aang and Korra went, the world still went to hell. I expect an Avatar Day level of twist and turns and drama (the episode of Book 2). Also Ebenezer made me appreaciate a lot more Jim Carrey for the restrain he showed.
But it's the story we haven't heard before! So like, I dunno he fights Krampus or something. Vampires maybe.
How long until Johnny Depp voices an Avatar character? That series is CURSED.
You should probably watch some good movies to cleanse your pallet a little bit. Have you considered marathoning pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the chocolate factory, and the Lone Ranger in a single sitting?
It sucks cause it’s from Ti West and also in the cast is Ian Makellen(who could play Scrooge in his SLEEP.)
Dude, I watched Madame Du Berry out of morbid curiosity and my god does Johnny Depp look rough in that film. The fact that he’s supposed to be a younger Ebenezer Scrooge despite being way older then when Michael Caine played him is sending me.
Watch the official trailer for EBENEZER. From director Ti West. Johnny Depp stars as Scrooge. Only in theaters November 13.
Ti west what are we doing man
cc Ti West #horrorsky #filmsky
If I had a nickel for every time Johnny Depp was sucked into a bed.... I'd have two nickels.
Johnny Depp is a prick, and I am still baffled that he won that case.
For the best version, go see Blackadder's Christmas Carol.
One of the three ghosts leaves a little phantom poop on his bed.
I recommend watching this with the sound off to really thoroughly drive home how tired and empty Depp's schtick is. A collection of tics and twitches, chasing past glories, signifying nothing
And wow is this the most self indulgent thing even by vanity project standards I have ever seen. Like, wow, it's just the same type of character Depp has been playing years ago and playing up that quirky thing he does. Like, that is desperate. And fuck Depp the wifebeater.
"The Master of Misfits." WHO the fuck has EVER called Johnny Depp that? As it is, I can watch any version of A Christmas Carol EXCEPT this one. I've got the Jim Carrey version, the Muppets version, the Mickey Mouse version, and Scrooged. Heck, this year, I plan to watch Spirited.
Your dumbest coworker has a new favorite movie!!!
Also, not for nothing, but as with the case of the misbegotten CRUELLA movie and the all-but-forgotten (deservedly) DRACULA UNTOLD, we already know what Scrooge's whole deal is; 1/3 of A Christmas Carol is dedicated to his past! bsky.app/profile/bloo...
Extremely funny that Depp thinks going full Mortdecai is his way back into the good graces of the public
“The Master of Misfits is back!” Back from what? Hey, team? Back from what?
if I wanted to watch a Tim Burton film lacking its outsider edge I'd watch any fucking Tim Burton film made after Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
What are we doing, Ti? Whyyyyyy?
My god... They really are trying to frame this as an untold origin story when Scrooge's backstory was part of the original text that Dickens wrote and performed on stage... I also see they're trying to use the same legacy of acting roles marketing as DIGGER and Johnny, you ain't Tom Cruise...
So this asshole's big comeback movie is him doing the same boring "Look at me I'm Jack Sparrow but without the charm and effort!" shitck that people got tired of by Alice in Wonderland? In a movie that looks like a cheap Tim Burton copy to boot. Fuck all the way off. Justice for Amber Heard fr.
You noticed that too? Because, he's doing the same thing AGAIN. The quirky Jack Sparrow personality thing and he applied to Scrooge? What? Fuck this. I'm watching the Robert Eggers version because he's not stupid enough to cast Depp as Scrooge.
It's all he can do these day. Also fuck Depp.
Just gonna watch The Muppet's Christmas Carol again
I want the moviegoers to see this movie and say, "Oh, THAT'S what playing the same character looks like" and everyone doing a "I'm sorry, [actor I was coerced to hate]" post.
Why does his appearance remind me of the Jim Carrey Count Olaf?
Oh, gods, there's a trailer too! Truly we live in hell.
Nothing says "Christmas classic" like a wife beating bastard.
The actual balls to have him saying "I'm back" in the trailer after they list a bunch of quirky off bean characters as though he was out of the spotlight for a couple years because he was convicted of spousal abuse.
Saw the new Ebenezer trailer with Johnny Depp and it’s surprising to see how through all the scandals, Depp has remained pure garbage
It’s helpful how the trailer showcases jack sparrow so you know you’re not getting Johnny trying to be serious but Johnny as a baffling caricature
At least he saved the production money in that they didn't have to use makeup on him to play Scrooge.
At least he stopped pretending to be indigenous.
Ebenezer is proof that Johnny Depp shifting into the "quirky guy" after Jack Sparrow was never his strong suit, because they all tried and failed to replicate Jack Sparrow. Compare it to Jim Carrey who's entire career he's the been the master at it. Depp can't really pull it off outside of one role
The Carrey movie has a lot of slapstick and goofy faces too but that's mostly during and after the ghosts appear. Til' then, Carrey plays it straight, the humor coming more for his talent to improvise mean comments and insults that feel like an old ass. Here Deep plays it more like Carrey's Grinch.
As soon as the trailer mentioned his other roles and seeing moments presented, it was very much a very eye rolling moment as it felt very self-indulgent even by vanity project standards.
He did a pretty good job playing Hunter S Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Then again, I think he used a bit of that bit in portraying Sparrow.
And even said jack sparrow role felt one dimensional in the sequels and got irritating
Yeah. I do think it‘s why his career started declining and he would have probably gone the way of Ezra Miller and I’m still hoping for that to happen to him.
There's a thing to be said about certain actors after having an iconic role. Like Ryan Reynolds having traces of Deadpool in his roles or Jeffrey Dean Morgan having traces of Negan after Walking Dead. Depp though, you can TELL it's in a contract rather than being part of any actual natural charisma
Coincidentally, Jim Carrey is also one of my favorite Scrooge actors. He has some exaggerated faces and slapstick too, but for a lot of the time, he plays the role completely straight with the occasional improv. But Depp overacts to a degree that even Carrey's Grinch would say is too much.
Even the Sparrow bit wore thin because what a lot of people forget is that it worked when Depp had people to play off of. Just him doing “weird quirky shit” isn’t enough to sell a movie.
