Charli XCX released Music, Fashion, Film today. Pitchfork reviewer Anna Gaca says the fashionably short record is a deliberate, first-draft, "one for me" album that follows her Wuthering Heights soundtrack and the cultural smash BRAT. Instead of BRAT's club pop and wounded electronics, Charli and co-producers A.G. Cook and Finn Keane steer toward rock with guitars; one track, "Magic Metal Montana," is dedicated to Cook. The album shifts lyrical focus from career insecurity to creativity and gratitude and leans into self-aware, deliberately rough edges, as on "Wink Wink," which includes the line "Maybe I fucked your dad/Just kidding I’m only saying that for effect." Songs such as "Yeah" and "2007" compress hooks and sonic stutters into short, clip-ready moments while "I’m Afraid" uses Pixies-style guitars and a triplet chant to expel anxiety. Pitchfork awarded the album an 8.2 score, praising Charli's knack for making imperfect, densely produced pop feel intentionally coordinated for effect.
