The Strokes release Reality Awaits

musicJul 24, 20264067

The Strokes released Reality Awaits, their seventh album and first since 2020, on RCA/Cult. Critics note Julian Casablancas fuses the ‘‘crackpot strangeness’’ and fondness for AutoTune of his other band the Voidz with the Strokes’ pop minimalism, producing playful, often joyous songs such as Going to Babble On and Going Shopping. Reviewers praise cleaner, tuneful production across much of the record while calling the closing track Tyrants of the Mellow Moon formless and unwieldy. One track contains a diss aimed at music critic Anthony Fantano, quoting ‘‘I heard that 20 fucking years ago...’’. Promotional coverage and reviews also highlight pronounced AutoTune and bold production choices; some listeners find those choices off-putting. The band debuted the new song Dine N'Dash live at Red Rocks hours before the album arrived and are scheduled to play Outside Lands on August 8.
