Trump delivers combative, often flat speech at WHCA dinner

journalismJul 25, 2026729,454

President Donald Trump delivered a combative speech at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Friday, opening by commending law enforcement for thwarting an alleged assassination attempt and then pivoting to ridicule reporters and political foes. Trump singled out CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, repeating that she “never smiles,” and mocked Jake Tapper and The Wall Street Journal’s Josh Dawsey while shaking the hands of Journal reporters who had won an award for their reporting on an alleged birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein. He attacked Democrats including Gov. Gavin Newsom, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and repeatedly insulted President Joe Biden with a joke about Biden losing consciousness. One of the louder laughs came from a joke about Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., in which Trump claimed Kennedy ran over a cow and proposed a raccoon roadkill appetizer. The speech drew a lukewarm reception as several jokes fell flat and Trump acknowledged some lines did not land, and he ended by donning a hat reading "Trump 2028," after a sarcastic announcement about running again. WHCA President and CBS correspondent Weijia Jiang used her introductory remarks to stress the importance of an independent, free press before Trump spoke.

Another example of why I subscribe to Status and so should you. “The result was a public humiliation for the White House Correspondents’ Association.” www.status.news/p/the-white-...

After insisting the correspondents' dinner was worth reviving, the WHCA handed Trump a nationally televised platform to smear the very journalists it exists to represent, effectively turn the stage into a Trump rally. It was a disgrace. My latest @status.news www.status.news/p/the-white-...

You want to know why too many people don't respect the media? It's because the media doesn't respect itself. We're all embarrassed for you. Have some fucking dignity.

One of the problems of the modern political press, beyond the access journalism, is that a lot of them treat this basically like their Met Gala and its effectively the sign that you've "made it."

I have a running list of fellow Asian Americans who piss me catastrophically off who I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from being rude to in person, and………

Not a fair assessment— It also allowed Trump to model a hat you can buy from his retail store for just $55.

everyone that went deserved to be disgraced. they ARE a disgrace. of COURSE that's what happened; that's why no one should have gone. celebrating the capitulation and death of journalism like this was fucking shameful even before they knew how bad it would actually turn out. fuck em all.

They laughed at his terrible jokes, and applaud it for him running in 2028. The White House Correspondents Association applauded for a President promising to violate the Constitution over and over again. Stop making George Orwell right, journalists.

Presumably most people had better things to do on a Friday night

And it was beyond predictable. This humiliation ritual was the point from jump and all these journalists who want us to respect their integrity and independence showed up with a smile knowing this would happen.

Why do people keep handing Trump a club to beat them with?

I wonder how many Americans truly understand that corporate media is listening to precisely *none* of the criticisms leveled against it. In a decade of the Trump era, they haven't changed their methods a whit and still don't understand why we see the WHCA dinner as contemptible.

It is Good that the only people who paid attention to the the WHCA dinner are the president and the people who decided it was OK to go.

"Some of the comments flirted with racism," says the Associated Press' story about Trump's White House Correspondents' Dinner speech. I'd say Trump's racism is far more than a flirtation.
