On Saturday pop star Katy Perry publicly condemned the White House for using her 2010 hit Firework as the soundtrack to a TikTok video showing U.S. strikes in Iran. The short video, posted to the White House TikTok account on Thursday, included footage of explosions in Iran with the caption “Iran has been warned,” and the blasts were timed to the lyric “Boom, boom, boom.” Perry said she was “deeply appalled and angry” that the song was used to soundtrack footage of violence and called the pairing a violation of the song’s themes of hope and healing. Perry also said she did not approve the use of Firework in the video.
