sportsJul 26, 202619262

Oscar Piastri retired from the Hungarian Grand Prix on lap 56 after his McLaren suffered a gearbox failure, ending a race in which he had led for the first half. Piastri got a strong start and took the lead when teammate Lando Norris ran wide at turn three, but McLaren pitted him early and he rejoined in heavy traffic. While attempting to lap Carlos Sainz, Piastri made contact with the Ferrari, costing him several seconds and allowing Norris to pit and emerge in the lead. Frustrated, Piastri used profanity on team radio, demanding Sainz move out of the way. The gearbox failure on lap 56 brought out a virtual safety car, which allowed Norris and Lewis Hamilton to pit. The retirement confirmed a miserable afternoon for the Australian after the midrace clash and the subsequent mechanical issue.
