WSJ: Taylor Farms lobbied White House to delay cyclospora recall

Representatives for Taylor Farms contacted the White House asking officials to delay announcing a recall tied to a major cyclospora outbreak, urging more proof and more time before the company was linked to the illnesses. Federal officials reviewed the FDA’s findings and then authorized the agency to make those findings public. The outbreak, which health officials call one of the largest U.S. foodborne illness events in recent years, causes cyclospora infections that can produce explosive diarrhea and has prompted public-health authorities to scramble to contain it. Bruce Taylor, Taylor Farms founder, spoke for the first time about the FDA investigation into the company’s lettuce. Critics including a former FDA commissioner said it was not standard procedure for the company to ask the White House to intervene as a recall was being prepared.

Taylor Farms donated $2 million to Trump and Republicans, then phoned the White House to slow the recall on lettuce tied to thousands of illnesses. The White House obligingly put the FDA on the line. A former FDA chief called that not standard. The rule that would trace it waits until 2028.
