Bird of the Day, theme 'Grey'

natureJul 27, 202623610,389

Bird of the Day is the daily community event with the theme #Grey, any bird showing grey in its plumage, and an alternate theme of #RedBeaks. Today’s gallery emphasizes shorebirds, raptors, and common garden species, with many quiet field shots and posed perches rather than action collages. Look for a territorial pair of northern flickers photographed in Longmont, Colorado, a Grey Heron perched atop a pine tree, a Great Grey Owl, and a few shorebirds and warblers that read as muted, grey-toned compositions. The alt theme appears in entries such as an Atlantic Puffin highlighted for its red beak and a Common Merganser drake on a river.

Photo by Kort Duce Two male northern flickers face off in a territorial dispute at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, one male northern flicker fills the frame as it clings to the trunk of a tree while facing the camera. A second flicker leans in from the right side of the frame as the two birds lock eyes in an intense standoff. They repeatedly confronted one another, alternating between prolonged stare-downs and brief scuffles as they pecked at each other with their beaks before finally tiring and flying away. The background is rendered as a soft blur of green vegetation, isolating the birds and emphasizing their dramatic interaction. This image captures a fascinating moment of territorial behavior between two male northern flickers within the riparian habitat that is vital to their survival.

A recently fledged Willow Warbler perches on a strand of barbed wire in warm golden sunlight, its soft, slightly fluffy plumage revealing its young age. The juvenile’s olive-brown upperparts contrast with its pale buff-yellow and light grey underparts, while its dark eye and slender, pointed bill give it an alert yet gentle expression. One wing is partially raised, suggesting it has just landed or is stretching after a short flight. Below the wire, fresh nettles add a touch of natural greenery, while the smooth blue background and shallow depth of field isolate the bird, drawing attention to the delicate feather textures and the quiet vulnerability of this young summer migrant.

He has a black head, white neck patch, a bright orange-red breast, and a dark mottled wing just visible. He is delicately perched on the top of a common bracken frond that is just unfurling its tightly wound spiral coiled leaves. The background is pale blue from the sky. A photo of a cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum) perched on grayed, wooden, pyramid-shaped post, seen from behind with head turned right in profile. It's a small songbird with a sleek crest on its tan head, a black mask over dark eyes, black beak, warm cinnamon-brown back and shoulders fading to soft gray on the wings, and a gray tail tipped in bright yellow. Waxy bright red tips that give it its name are visible on the secondary wing feathers. It stands straight and tall, looking alert, and is photographed against a smooth green background in diffuse lighting.
