Carly Simon reveals Parkinson’s diagnosis and recent skin cancer treatment

Carly Simon, 83, announced she has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and recently underwent surgery to remove basal cell carcinoma from her face. Simon said doctors at the Mayo Clinic diagnosed her after she developed mobility problems following knee and hip replacements. She described Parkinson’s as unpredictable, causing exhaustion and episodes of apathy that left her withdrawing from public view because the facial surgery changed her appearance. Simon credited the recording process for her new album, Comes in Waves, with giving structure to her days and said music "has rescued me more times than I can count." Comes in Waves is scheduled for release on 14 August. She thanked her doctors, family and friends, and said she has not stopped living despite moving more slowly and leaning on others more than before.

My wife has Parkinson's, only diagnosed two years ago. Same generation as Carly. More and more evidence indicates that childhood exposure to pesticides can cause the eventual development of Parkinson's. My wife grew up next to an orchard that was bugkiller gassed by crop dusting planes.

My mom passed away from Parkinson's at age 90. One of the pitfalls is swallowing food and not asperating on it, which gets in the lungs and causes pneumonia.Small bits helps. I remember reading that aluminum could be one of the causes..aluminum pans and cooking utensils were often used in early days

Three years ago I took the Smell Test through the #MichaelJFoxFoundation. Last week I was asked to fill out some surveys related to Parkinson’s research. I also got my smell test results — 83% (anything above 40% is good). I have a brother with Parkinson’s and two aunts, one cousin had it.
