Conflow Power Group's iLamps, solar-powered streetlights installed in Warwickshire, carry cameras and company claims they can double as a "revenue-generating distributed AI datacentre" able to detect vehicles and faces. CPG says it has an agreement to supply 50,000 iLamps to Katsina state, Nigeria, and chairman Edward Fitzpatrick told the BBC World Service Tech Life programme the lamps could ultimately help track missing people or fight crime if developed with relevant authorities. Rights group Big Brother Watch warns the technology could add AI capabilities such as gait analysis and suspicious-behaviour detection. The article reports low public awareness about the installations, local officials and the hospital directing questions away, and some residents in the area accepting existing camera coverage as normal. The Guardian flags unresolved questions about who would own and control the harvest of personal data and notes concern after a home secretary was quoted invoking a "panopticon state." The piece documents a gap between vendor publicity and independent scrutiny of how much of the iLamp surveillance potential has been realised in the UK.

Are you asking if we should worry that AI companies are holding national infrastructure to ransom so that, when the bubble bursts, the government will be forced to bail them out? That's not even starting with the privacy concerns of course

We shouldn't trust AI companies, or our complicit governments, with surveillance infrastructure like this. They have already proven that they're quite happy to abuse innocent people when it suits their aims.
