CBS News announced that Ross Douthat, the conservative New York Times columnist, will join 60 Minutes as a correspondent, and that author Sebastian Junger, filmmaker Gianna Toboni, and CBS News correspondent Trevor Phillips will also join the program, the Paramount Skydance news division said Tuesday. The hires are presented as part of executive producer Nick Bilton’s overhaul intended to remake the look and feel of the venerable newsmagazine. Variety reports the appointments as additions to the show’s reporting roster, and the staffing changes come alongside other moves such as Norah O’Donnell’s promotion to correspondent. The announcement frames the new lineup as a deliberate shift in tone and personnel for 60 Minutes under the Skydance-era leadership.

Not only am I told that CBS News staffers are alarmed by Ross Douthat being appointed as a "60 Minutes" correspondent, but industry veterans are aghast. "The idea that Ross can be a ‘60’ correspondent is a joke," one TV exec told me. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/60-minutes...
