Bird of the Day, theme 'Egrets And Herons'

natureJul 31, 20262279,549

Today's Bird of the Day theme is Egrets And Herons, a daily community prompt asking for any egret or heron. Contributors are sharing wildlife photos and bird art focused on herons and egrets, plus an alternate Yellow theme featuring yellow-plumaged birds. Look for a great blue heron portrait taken at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado, a snowy egret displaying its mating feathers at Brazos Bend State Park, Texas, and a Least Bittern peering through thick reeds into pond muck.

Photo by Kort Duce A great blue heron poses for a portrait at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron fills the frame in right profile with its legs cropped from view. Its neck is fully extended, with a gentle curve, as it surveys its surroundings. Cattail reeds rise behind the bird, while the pond in the far background reflects the brilliant blue sky, creating a vibrant backdrop that complements the heron's elegant form. This intimate portrait highlights the grace and beauty of a great blue heron in its natural wetland habitat.

A Little Egret stands quietly among short green shoreline grasses, its brilliant white plumage glowing in warm sunlight against a deep, dark, softly blurred background. The bird is shown in profile, looking to the right with a striking pale yellow eye and a long, slender black bill. Fine breeding plumes cascade gracefully from its back and tail, their delicate strands catching the light and revealing intricate feather detail. A few wisps of down cling to the tip of the bill, suggesting recent preening. The contrast between the egret’s pristine white feathers and the shadowy backdrop draws attention to its elegant shape and calm, watchful posture, creating a simple yet dramatic portrait of this graceful wetland bird.

Digital painting of a Least Bittern clinging to green reeds as it aims downward, watching the water carefully for movement. It has yellow eyes, a very sharp pointy beak, and a mottled gray-yellow-reddish back. The water surface is murky and covered in little green duckweed leaves.

A photo of two American goldfinches (Spinus tristis) on top of a chain-link fence against a black background. The front bird, an adult male, has a black cap, bright yellow body, and dark wings, and is flopped over awkwardly with one wing spread down around the top rail of the fence, while behind him, a brownish-yellow juvenile bird flaps its wings and appears to have one foot on his back. Both birds have soft, whitish-colored regurgitated food visible in their beaks. It's a feeding session gone awry.

3 bare branches shoot up through the framed clear blue sky. On the leftmost branch, a hooded oriole is perched in profile. We see the yellow body and "hood" over his head. He has black wings, tail and face. He also has a decurved shiny black beak and a glint of light off his right eye. There are two white wing bars on the black wing.

A close-up, sharp profile photograph captures a graceful great egret holding a tiny tadpole right at the tip of its long, bright yellow bill. The head, neck and the top part of his body is in the frame. The egret's pristine white plumage curves elegantly along its slender, S-shaped neck, contrasting against the dark, out-of-focus background of the water. Its piercing yellow eye, framed by delicate green skin near the lores, focuses intensely on the catch.
