Bird of the Day is a daily community event; today’s theme is #OverTheRainbow, any bird looking skyward, with an alternate theme #HedgingYourBets for birds in a hedge or bush. The gallery features upward-gazing subjects from tiny songbirds to herons and raptors, often photographed in moments of alertness or song. Standout entries include an immature Grey Butcherbird pictured “wondering which way is up,” an Agami Heron at Agami Island looking skyward, and a Goldcrest photographed in a bush. A fluffy juvenile European robin stands upright in short green grass, its rounded body covered in mottled brown plumage before the familiar adult red breast develops.
