Yorkshire Day, celebrating county identity on August 1

Yorkshire Day on 1 August unites communities across the historic county to celebrate Yorkshire’s heritage, landscape, culture and people. RealCounties and other organisers are encouraging people across the whole historic county to fly the Yorkshire flag and share county stories, stressing that Yorkshire comprises the City of York and the North, East and West Ridings rather than current council boundaries. The event was established by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1975 and the date alludes to the regimental anniversary of the Battle of Minden and to William Wilberforce’s campaign linked to emancipation in 1834. Goole in the West Riding is the official Yorkshire Day host town in 2026, marking the town’s bicentenary year, and the civic celebration brings together mayors and other civic representatives. Organisers and RealCounties argue that local government reorganisations and changing council names do not diminish the historic county, which they say provides a permanent framework for heritage, tourism, education and identity. The House of Lords recently highlighted historic counties as a national bond and singled out Yorkshire as an example of strong historic-county identity.
