Yorkshire Day, celebrating county identity on August 1

Today, 1 August, communities across the historic county are marking Yorkshire Day, celebrating Yorkshire’s heritage, landscape, culture and people. Goole in the West Riding is serving as the official Yorkshire Day host town in 2026 during the town’s bicentenary year, and the annual civic event brings together mayors and civic representatives from across Yorkshire. Yorkshire Day was established by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1975; the date alludes to the regimental anniversary of the Battle of Minden and to the 1834 emancipation campaign led by Yorkshireman William Wilberforce. RealCounties.com is encouraging people across the whole historic county to fly the Yorkshire flag, share stories and affirm an identity that covers the City of York and the North, East and West Ridings. Organisers and commentators are using the day to underline the distinction between the historic county and changing council boundaries and to renew the case for meaningful devolution for Yorkshire. The Government highlighted historic counties, including Yorkshire, during a recent House of Lords debate, describing them as bonds that draw the nation together.
