Bird of the Day, theme 'Bestofjuly'

natureAug 2, 202620811,104

Bird of the Day is a daily community event and today's theme is #BestOfJuly, selected by Rob. The gallery collects favorite July shots focused on wildlife moments: raptors and waterbirds, backyard and wetland sightings, fledglings, and close closeups with strong light and reflections. Standout examples include a bald eagle panting on a snag with Wild Horse Island and Flathead Lake in the background, a Rufous Hummingbird with its beak buried in a penstemon flower, and a grumpy fledgling Wren waiting for a parent to deliver breakfast. Browse posts tagged #BestOfJuly to see the full set of July highlights.

Photo by Kort Duce A bald eagle pants while perching in a dead snag along the shore of Flathead Lake in Montana. The mountain in the background is Wild Horse Island, a 2,164-acre state park. In this vertical color photograph, a weathered dead snag rises from the lower left of the frame, where a bald eagle is perched at its highest point with its head turned in right profile. Its beak is open, revealing its tongue as it pants in the warm evening air. The lower fifth of the image is filled with the gently rippled waters of Flathead Lake. Beyond the lake, Wild Horse Island rises approximately 855 feet above the water, its slopes covered with a mosaic of pine forests and Palouse-like prairie grasslands. Warm golden light from the setting sun bathes the entire scene, enhancing the rich colors and textures of the landscape. This beautiful scenic photograph captures a bald eagle in its natural lakeside habitat, an environment that provides the food, shelter, and nesting areas essential to its survival.

A small female Stonechat perches on a rusty wire fence in warm golden sunlight. Her finely mottled brown plumage, pale buff breast, and dark eye are sharply in focus, while a softly blurred green background creates a smooth, natural backdrop. A single out-of-focus seed head rises behind her, adding depth without distracting from the bird. She faces to the right in a relaxed, alert pose, with both feet gripping the weathered wire. The shallow depth of field isolates the Stonechat, highlighting the intricate feather detail and warm earthy tones.

The photograph shows a close-up of a brown-black crow, viewed from the side. Its head is turned slightly to the right, so that its dark eye and strong, pointed beak are clearly visible. Blurred green vegetation can be seen in the background.

A bald Eagle flies right to left with wings up, yellow beak out ahead and a fish hanging in the clutch of the eagle’s talons below its white tail. The background is the icy glacier-blue water of Glacier Bay in Alaska, with random ice berglets floating by. The photo was taken from the bow of the Grand Princess cruise ship.

A Fledgling Wren perched on a small branch in the forest. The bird is close up, to the right of centre of the frame. It is facing the camera with its body turned slightly to the left and head looking down so its left side is visible. The branch it is on runs from the bottom right of the shot along the bottom and turns down before the left corner. The upright stem runs along the right in shadow. The background is out of focus green vegetation with lighter patches of dappled light.

A medium shot features a gray and white songbird perching on a thin, lichen-covered branch against a clear, pale blue sky. The bird looks over its right shoulder, revealing a distinct black mask across its eyes and a heavy, hooked black beak. Its chest and underparts display a soft off-white color, while its back and long, narrow tail feathers show shades of medium gray. The textured bark of the angled branch contrasts with the smooth, uniform background.

Two Red‑bellied Woodpeckers cling to the trunk of a tree, one on each side. They’re positioned upright on the bark. Each bird has a bright red cap on its head, a pale face, and a back patterned with black and white bars. The male is on the left; his red crown goes from forehead to nape. The female on the right has a red crown just on the nape and a gray forehead.

Female red-winged blackbird in flight. The bird is shown from a front left quartering view, its wings in downstroke and blurred at the tips. She is gazing straight ahead, which has her looking a little to the left of the camera. Blurry lake water forms the background, and a few stalks of grass in the left corner, also blurry, are in the foreground.

A photo of a violet-green swallow (Tachycineta thalassina) nest inside a drain pipe in the side of a corrugated metal wall. Three brown and white feathered chicks are visible in the pipe opening, in focus and facing the camera, their bright yellow and red mouths wide open as they beg for food. Slightly out of focus in the foreground, with iridescent green back and violet wings and tail, an adult swallow approaches the nest cavity with wings spread wide.
