The Trump administration is planning a major overhaul of Head Start that would sharply reduce federal program standards, two people familiar with the deliberations told The Associated Press. Current Head Start regulations run more than 100 pages; the administration would replace them with roughly a dozen pages and leave many specifics to state and local law. The draft would require more documentation from parents who are homeless or unemployed, and an early version would have barred enrollment for children of parents in the country illegally, though it is unclear whether that provision will remain. Head Start serves more than half a million low-income babies, toddlers and preschoolers in all 50 states and provides free preschool, developmental screenings and family supports. The Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees Head Start, said a rule would be published this week and that the administration aims to expand access, increase local flexibility and reduce administrative burden, Emily Hilliard said. Khari Garvin, who ran the Office of Head Start under President Biden, warned the changes could leave only "the carcass of Head Start," saying the program might keep the name but lose its substance.

I worked as a substitute in a head start program.It really opened my eyes to the need for this program.I could afford to send my boys to good preschools but those less fortunate loved that this program we available to there kids for free.Our countries kids deserve this so they are not left behind!
