NYT analysis: AIPAC doubled political spending

The New York Times reports the American Israel Public Affairs Committee has more than doubled its campaign spending in recent years, rising from $29.3 million to $67.2 million. Since April 2022 AIPAC-related groups have funded 109 TV and digital ads in U.S. races, and the organization’s super PAC created in 2022, United Democracy Project, has spent more on ads over the past three cycles than any nonparty special interest group, according to the Times’ analysis of AdImpact data. Much of the money has been funneled into Democratic primaries and into ads that emphasize voter priorities like abortion rights and the economy rather than Israel; the Times notes almost none of the ads mention Israel. Donations to United Democracy Project spiked after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, enabling a rapid ramp-up of political efforts. AIPAC has spent more than $30 million on ads and outreach to promote Representative Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary against Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, which the Times calls the group’s biggest test yet. The shift marks a major change from AIPAC’s decadeslong role as a bipartisan lobbying group to a major player in federal elections, with the immediate outcome hinging on this and other primary contests.
