Statistics Canada reported a surprising gain of 75,000 jobs in July, far above economists' Reuters poll forecast of about 15,000, with the increase split between full-time and part-time work. The unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point from June to 6.4 percent, its lowest level in two years, leaving Canada 181,000 jobs above April and 196,000 above a year earlier. Sector details show wholesale and retail added 21,000 jobs but remain down 50,000 year-over-year, finance and related industries added 18,000, and professional, scientific and technical services added 17,000; public administration lost 15,000 and agriculture lost 9,600. Average hourly wages rose 2.8 percent year-over-year in July, down from 3.3 percent in June, and youth unemployment held at 12.6 percent, down 1.9 points from a year ago. CIBC senior economist Andrew Grantham said the figures align with GDP signs of recovery, while RBC assistant chief economist Nathan Janzen cautioned the labour market is not yet strong. Desjardins managing director Royce Mendes said the data make a Bank of Canada interest rate hike unlikely before 2027.

When the unemployment rate “eases” it’s because they stop counting people who are unemployed as being “in the job market” if they haven’t applied for work in 4 weeks, including people who stopped applying because work isn’t available. They also exclude people working only part-time out of necessity.
