William Orbit dies aged 69, producer of Madonna's Ray of Light

William Orbit, the British producer behind Madonna’s 1998 album Ray of Light, died at home on 23 July at age 69, a statement attributed to family and friends said. No cause of death was given. Orbit’s production on Ray of Light supplied the trip-hop, jungle and techno‑rooted backings for hits such as Frozen, The Power of Goodbye and the title track; the album sold multi-platinum worldwide and helped Madonna win three of five Grammy nominations in 1999. His credits also include Blur’s exploratory 13, All Saints’ UK No 1 Pure Shores and Black Coffee, and Pink’s UK No 3 Feel Good Time, and he was credited as a guest artist on some collaborations. Orbit released a string of solo albums including the Strange Cargo series and scored a UK Top 5 hit in 1999 with his electronic version of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Born William Wainwright in 1956 and raised in north London, he formed the electronic trio Torch Song in 1980 and later worked as a remixer and soundtrack composer before achieving mainstream pop success in the 1990s.

The first and last songs on tonight’s 2000 show were produced by William Orbit. He was perhaps best known for his work with All Saints, Blur and also Madonna. He worked with the latter on her excellent Ray Of Light album that was released in 1998 May he rest in peace 🖤 #TOTP
