Paul Heaton night airs on BBC Two

BBC Two is dedicating an evening to Paul Heaton, airing a retrospective of his songwriting career plus live coverage of his Bramall Lane concert, available to watch live on BBC iPlayer. The programmes revisit Heaton’s work with The Housemartins and The Beautiful South and include performances such as the explicit version of Don’t Marry Her. Posts from viewers note a moving communal performance of Caravan of Love at the funeral of Paul Jackson earlier this year, where Heaton and drummer Hugh Whitaker sang with the congregation. Several viewers praised Heaton’s songwriting craft and personal decency, and noted vocalist Jacqui Abbott briefly stepped away during the broadcast to look after her son.

This will sound odd but he reminds me of early-70s Scott Walker while being nothing like him. A gifted voice (vastly underrated in Heaton's case) and a brilliant lyricist who's ploughed a furrow untroubled by trends or chasing fame.

Paul Heaton kept me sane(ish) when my 3 toddlers started mobilising- and I'm glad his lyrics are popular with so many other people. It didn't even feel odd that my pre school daughter sang some Beautiful South songs with me (oops!).

Agreed. We were really stoned at the time in favour of other artists... but Heaton and co have now convinced me they were all clever drama school geniuses.

I was a fan of the HouseMartins Got London 0 Hull 4 for Christmas 1986 I was always a fan of their Acapella songs I wasn't that much of a fan of The Beautiful South There were some songs like "Song for whoever" that made my ears bleed especially the line about PRS cheques that I didn't like

If anybody asks me if I've ever met anyone famous I struggle to think of one, but I've played football with Paul Heaton, he's bought me drinks and we've had drunken, rambling conversations about Scottish football. To me he's a really sound bloke who lived on Beverley Road and drank in my locals.

Paul Heaton night on the BBC has just been an absolute joy. My oldest sister introduced me to The Housemartins when I was very young and I’ve loved his voice ever since. He was also very very kind to me a few years ago on Twitter.
