Paul Heaton night airs on BBC Two

The music industry is almost built to obstruct folk like Paul Heaton from having long careers that put them in a position where BBC2 can devote an entire evening to their music. And yet somehow, he has swerved every single trap whilst being a profoundly decent human at all times.

After Paul Jackson, progenitor of the Adelphi Club in Hull, died earlier this year, his funeral service included Caravan of Love. The congregation-including Paul Heaton & Hugh Whitaker-sang along with the recording. It started off a little tentatively but became deeply moving. youtu.be/88yXHVc1sKU

Watching the Paul Heaton thing on BBC2 and it has to be said, he's the undisputed champion of not feeling the benefit.

Paul Heaton is bordering on national treasure status. His songwriting craftsmanship is superb and his moral compass is on point. Surprised there isn’t more dancing at the Bramall gig though!

Was always a bit irritated by Paul Heaton back in the day, but I have to now acknowledge that he's a great songwriter.

If anybody asks me if I've ever met anyone famous I struggle to think of one, but I've played football with Paul Heaton, he's bought me drinks and we've had drunken, rambling conversations about Scottish football. To me he's a really sound bloke who lived on Beverley Road and drank in my locals.

Forty years ago next month, I saw The Housemartins for the first time. Paul Heaton has been a constant through my life. A shared love of his music ensured that my girlfriend walked down the aisle to 'Caravan Of Love' to become my wife. Such an unassuming bloke, but he's cast from solid gold.
