Club América beats Portland Timbers 3-1 in Leagues Cup

Club América defeated the Portland Timbers 3-1 in Leagues Cup play at Portland’s home stadium, with Violante and Perea among Club América’s scorers. The loss closed out Jack Cassidy’s interim tenure; Cassidy thanked supporters in his final presser, saying “it’s been an amazing journey” and that he is “proud of what we did and how we left the team.” Portland forward Kristoffer Velde said post-match he had never seen so many yellow shirts in the home stands, calling the atmosphere “I’ve never seen this in my life.” Timbers players and some local supporters said the team showed effort and competitiveness for much of the match but conceded Club América’s quality ultimately decided the result. The match highlighted both Portland’s current struggles and Club América’s ability to draw large West Coast support to away fixtures.

Club America drew fans from all across the West Coast who made a vacation out of going to see their team play in person. That's not just Oregonian Aguilas fans. They have that kind of pull because they're the biggest club in North America. It's a unique case. No other club in the world can do it.

It also helps that Timbers STHs chose to sell their tickets at an upcharged price to recoup season ticket costs or simply didn't care enough about this obvious cash-grab tournament to even opt in for tickets in the first place. This game was sold separately, not as part of the STH package.

And, for outsiders, Leagues Cup starts out with far far fewer season tickets holders in the first place because it’s not part of the regular package and MLS fans don’t necessarily care about this tournament. Which gives a huge amount of seats for motivated CA fans

Indeed. It reminded me of some of Messi's away games, and I guess partly due to home supporters not being bothered about the Leagues Cup, combined with the way tickets can be re-sold.

My dad and I attend practically every game and have even learned to look forward to these LC games too. I thought maybe we’d have more interest in our fan base following the World Cup, but our fans were few and far between up in our section on the east side.

Liga MX down to eight who can qualify for the knockouts. If I had to guess, the four will be Club America, Cruz Azul, Tigres and Toluca. MLS, I think will have eight point cutoff, with CLT, CLB, CIN & LAFC most likely. If that were to happen, I think a Liga MX side is favored to win.
