HBO confirmed that House of the Dragon will conclude with a fourth and final season, expected to air in 2028. Season 3 closed on August 9, 2026, after an eight-episode run that began on June 21 and culminated in the large-scale Battle of Tumbleton between the Blacks and the Greens. The finale carried a heavy body count: Queen Helaena Targaryen, played by Phia Saban, died after jumping from a Red Keep window while pregnant, and Lord Ormund Hightower, played by James Norton, was killed during the fighting; multiple other characters also died. Forbes called the Battle of Tumbleton the largest and best action sequence the series has produced. HBO had renewed the series for Season 4 in November 2025; co-creator Ryan Condal and Emma D'Arcy have begun discussing Rhaenyra’s storyline, with Condal reiterating he always viewed the show as a tragedy. Attention now turns to how Season 4 will wrap the Dance of Dragons and resolve the consequences of Tumbleton for House Targaryen.
