Congo’s Ebola outbreak has recorded 4,381 confirmed cases and 2,011 deaths, government data published overnight into Tuesday shows, making it the fastest growing Ebola outbreak on record. The outbreak was declared on May 15 and has 704 patients currently in admission and isolation; it took about nine weeks to reach 1,000 deaths and just around three weeks to record the next 1,000. The rare Bundibugyo virus is responsible and has no approved vaccines or treatments, though clinical trials have begun in Ituri, the epicenter. Health authorities say the response is being hampered by rebel conflict, bad roads and work stoppages after many health workers struck over lack of payment. The World Health Organization said the outbreak likely began in February, with some early cases misattributed to malaria and typhoid, and WHO Africa regional director Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi warned officials are "chasing the virus, the virus is ahead of us." This is Congo’s 17th Ebola outbreak and the second-largest on record after the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic.
