Amber heat-health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency are in force across most of England from Tuesday until Friday evening as a fifth summer heatwave begins. The UKHSA warned significant impacts are likely across health and social care, including a rise in deaths, and said older people and those with health conditions are most at risk while younger groups may also be affected. Temperatures will widely be in the low to mid-30s Celsius, peaking in parts of the Midlands, eastern and south-east England where 35 to 36C is possible by Thursday or Friday; Wednesday sees more than 30C across an area from South Yorkshire to east Wales and Somerset. The North East has been given a yellow alert rather than amber. The National Drought Group has declared 71.3% of England in drought and added new areas including the East Midlands, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Kent and East Sussex, and the Solent and the South Downs. Overnight lows are expected to remain high, around 16 to 18C, with a possibility of a “tropical night” above 20C in south-east England. The Met Office may consider issuing extreme heat warnings, which would extend concerns beyond health to infrastructure such as transport and power networks as demand on services rises.

I know it's the seflish human angle, but perhaps it's time (long past) to build some reservoirs, instead of data centres. I'm with you Guy, this is very depressing. Working in the heat is debilitating, and then getting decent sleep is difficult as well.

I still can’t wrap my head around heatwave/drought news articles that don’t mention climate change. The best this article can do is say “this has been a year like no other”. Heatwaves are hotter because of climate change, predominantly driven by burning fossil fuels. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/arti...
