Burgas to host Eurovision Song Contest 2027

The European Broadcasting Union and Bulgarian National Television announced that Arena Burgas will host the 71st Eurovision Song Contest with Semi-Final 1 on 11 May, Semi-Final 2 on 13 May and the Grand Final on 15 May 2027. The decision follows Bulgaria’s win last May with singer Dara and comes as the EBU also tightened eligibility rules so broadcasters cannot host if their state is involved in an “armed conflict” or “sensitive geopolitical situation.” The EBU said an independent security body will assess potentially difficult situations and it will appoint an alternative host broadcaster if a winning member is ruled ineligible. The rule changes also raise the minimum competing artist age from 16 to 18. Organisers cited feedback from members and said the changes aim to give clearer protections for artists and production staff and to ensure a safe and welcoming environment. The announcement noted Eurovision’s recent shifts: Liverpool hosted in 2023 after Ukraine’s win, Canada will join the main contest, and a Eurovision Asia spin-off is planned for Bangkok.

Considering Sofia seemed like the 'obvious' pick, and 90% of the fandom apparently think Burgas is totally unfit as a host city, it'll be interesting to see what swung it in their favour. Was Sofia's bid not up to scratch? Or was Burgas' better than expected? Or both?

Eurovision hosts next year confirmed as Burgas (Bulgaria's coastal resort - have been murmurings of government interference to secure this...). Looks like smallest arena in a while, but 4k fixed seats and likely overall 8k capacity (bigger than 6k for Liverpool). Tickets likely still eyewatering
