Jimmy Rimmer dies aged 78

Jimmy Rimmer has died at the age of 78. The Southport-born goalkeeper was on the bench when Manchester United beat Benfica to win the 1968 European Cup. He started Aston Villa's 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final but was replaced by Nigel Spink after nine minutes because of a neck injury. Rimmer started every game of Villa's run to that final and in their 1980-81 league title-winning campaign. He made 229 league appearances for Aston Villa and also spent time with Swansea City and Arsenal, winning Arsenal's player of the season award in 1974-75. Rimmer earned one England cap in a friendly against Italy in 1976. Aston Villa and Manchester United said they were "deeply saddened" by his death, Arsenal also paid tribute, and former United team-mate Alex Stepney posted a condolence message.

I supported the Villa in my youth in the 70s and 80s then hooliganism in football put an end to my interest. When football comes up in conversation I still say - "last time I watched football, Jimmy Rimmer was in goal". RIP to a legend.

As an Arsenal fan I’d add my condolences to Jimmy’s family. He’s up there in the discussion of our top keepers - we weren’t very good as a team when he was with us, and he was important in keeping us going. Sad news indeed

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba... This is sad. One of the only goalkeepers to break the Shilton/Clemence hold on the England No1 jersey. Even if he was a one cap wonder. Others were Corrigan, Bailey, Spink, Woods, Beasant and Seaman. Even if old led boots ended up as goalie at tournaments.
