The FDA on 12 August reclassified a recall of nearly 1.6 million dozen white and brown cage-free eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services in Texas as Class I, the agency’s highest risk level. The reclassification followed an ongoing multistate Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 98 people across 17 states and hospitalized 26, with illnesses reported from 21 November 2025 to 30 June 2026. Midwest Poultry Services identified the contamination through proactive environmental monitoring and root cause analysis and had stopped distributing fresh eggs from its Texas farms as of 22 July. The recalled eggs carry best-by and sell-by dates through 17 August and were shipped across Texas and the US South and Southwest, including to Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana and Brookshire Grocery locations in six states. Public health agencies have reported no deaths associated with the outbreak as of 24 July. The recall notice lists specific products in the enforcement report and advises consumers to return affected eggs to the place of purchase for a refund.
