Reform UK proposes ban on foreign nationals claiming benefits

politicsAug 17, 2026495,224

Reform UK says it would bar most foreign nationals from almost all welfare payments, including EU nationals with settled status, a change that would require renegotiating the UK’s Brexit withdrawal agreement. In a speech on Monday, the party’s economy spokesman Robert Jenrick said "The British taxpayer is acting as the welfare state for the world" and claimed the policy would save £21 billion a year by its fifth year as part of a wider 50-page plan that it says will save £50 billion annually. The proposal would remove access to housing benefit, pension credit, jobseeker’s allowance, child benefit, free childcare and disability benefits, with only limited exemptions such as the war widows pension and Armed Forces compensation. Reform estimates that by 2029 around 1.5 million non-British adults would receive Universal Credit and about 215,000 would receive Personal Independence Payment without the change. The party also proposes a "welfare to work" scheme requiring claimants who have been on benefits more than 12 months to perform 20 hours a week of community work organised by local councils, with sanctions including potential benefit cuts for noncompliance. Labour responded that the "vast majority" of migrants already have no access to benefits, and the Conservatives dismissed the plans as "cobbled together." Government figures show welfare spending this year is expected to total £322 billion in Great Britain, 10.6% of GDP, with just over half going to pensioners.

Reform put this crap out for attention and in order to appear like a serious political outfit. They're in fact DEEPLY unserious and should be treated as such. Far too many people start to engage with what is essentially a game of pigeon chess. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

There’s something deeply repellent about Reform’s vengeful and racist obsession to take money from the most vulnerable when they’re under multiple investigations for breaking rules, dodging tax and gorging on £millions for themselves. (And trashing our EU agreement is just so thick it hurts) iPaper

EU'would retaliate on welfare plan'
By Arj Singh
The EU could launch a trade war against the UK and would probably strip British expats of benefits in retaliation to Reform's plan to ban foreign nationals from nearly all welfare payments.
Nigel Farage was warned that Brussels was likely to react with fury to his party's plan to bar foreign nationals, including EU citizens with settled status, from claiming most benefits in Britain.
Under the terms of Brexit, the EU could also launch economic retaliation, for exampleby suspending parts of the trade deal between the two sides including putting up tariffs that would hit the economy. Anand Menon, the director of the think-tank UK in a Changing Europe told The i Paper: "The proposals would breach the terms of the withdrawal agreement and the EU will doubtless retaliate, whether that be by making life harder for Britons in the EU or by triggering retaliatory trade measures.
"Either way, it will impact severely on UK-EU relations."
Reform's Treasury spokesman, Robert Jenrick, insisted that the ban was necessary because
"forcing British workers to pay for the benefits of foreigners is not just economically illiterate but plain immoral".

Well, I am one such ‘foreigner’ I.e. EU settled status transferred here for work from NY to London And I can assure Mr Jenrick, that what I have thus far paid in taxes which by extension naturally also pays for benefits to ‘British workers’ far surpasses what many British pay So he can f off

It’s all they’ve got. Perhaps the 46% economically inactive voters in Clacton should start paying attention as this is aimed at them. Turkey’s and Christmas spring to mind

What I don't understand is why the media is treating these 'policies' as if they will ever happen in practice. Reform could announce that they would kill the firstborn and the media would cover it and debate the outcome. It's all bollocks to distract from the Farage money laundering investigations.

My Polish DiL has lived and worked in the UK for nearly 15 years, if she isn't going to be allowed to claim any benefits why should she pay tax, it's a ridiculous policy which will fall apart like a cheap suit with proper scrutiny.

Donna15

They're like the one person in the workplace who has ridiculous obnoxious political views being given the red carpet every bloody week. A bunch of nasty bastards we're supposed to take seriously. Fuck to that!

Reform is deploying the Trumpian “own the libs” tactic, that is putting out ridiculous and provocative ideas to get everyone who cares about upholding human decency all riled up and foaming at the mouth. The objective is to shift the news agenda away from Reform’s corruption. It seems to be working.

The ban would include European Union (EU) nationals with settled status in the UK. It would require renegotiating the UK's Brexit deal with the EU, potentially meaning that British expatriates living in the EU could lose equivalent rights. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Mike Bailey14

Why are the extreme racist policy wet dreams of a far right party with 8 MPs, half not even elected to the party, given headline prominence by the national broadcaster? Has the BBC become FoxNews for the UK? Why is the Labour government condoning this?

mikefa.bsky.social3

we all know that Reform could not give a toss appealing only to self centred individuals and frustrated Tories who are pure hypocrites having no soles !

#RobertJenrick is, of course, the Tory Housing Secretary who unlawfully fast-tracked a £1 billion property development for Tory donor Richard Desmond. #MillionPoundlandTrump #ReformUK

Neill Morgan the (Non) legend that is Ironmorg 2

Bloody hell, Reform being given inordinate amounts of publicity again. This is a non starter, and it is being reported as if it's a Done deal. Bloody hell BBC scrutinise it properly and have your journalists do your fucking jobs

mark norris2

This is EXACTLY what they want, isn't it? Restarting a row with the EU to prevent any possibility of them responding positively to overtures from the present UK government. The 'We can't trust the Brits' response so long as there is the remotest possibilty of voters returning a Deform majority.

Karen by name not nature! 📎 🦋2

Sooo if you were lucky enough to retire to the EU and are getting your state pension paid into your bank. Vote Deform…… your pension will be stopped. Especially difficult if it is part of your unearned income that allows you to be retired to the EU!!!

Reform UK plans ban on all foreign nationals claiming benefits, including EU citizens legally settled in UK They can work, pay taxes but won't get most benefits. Expect other countries to retaliate. At home, will cut benefits to poor, disabled, old, children. Silence on corporate welfare.

@paddyopatrick.bsky.social

Why oh why is BBC headlining half arsed policies, by a minority Party with just 8 MPs, that’s in a tailspin down the polls, awash with financial investigations over dodgy dealings❓ It’s clearly a diversion.. 🤷🏻‍♂️ LibDems have 71 MPs, when was the last time one of their policies got such coverage🤔

Reform would strip benefits from EU citizens with settled status, ripping up the Brexit deal & putting UK-EU migrants at risk. Totally out of touch with what Brits actually want - CLOSER ties with our allies. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/farage-jenrick-migrants-welfare-reform-37558189

Among many other things, the Withdrawal Agreement is international law and supposed to protect the rights of EU citizens who were living in the UK pre-Brexit. What Reform is proposing is a significant violation of that, undermining relations with the EU on other areas. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Very unlikely that the EU would agree to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement on this point. Plus yer man Jenrick there was in a Conservative government that called it an "oven ready deal" www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Just reading through Reform UK's constitution. A motion of no confidence in the Party Leader can only be called if "50% of all Members in Good Standing write to the Chairman requesting" it. 50% of 280,000-odd members writing to the Chairman is an *extraordinarily* high bar. Basically impossible.

No confidence motions
6.28.A motion of no confidence in the Party Leader may be proposed in two ways:
6.28.1. by 50 Members of the Parliamentary Party or 50% of the Members of the
Parliamentary Party (whichever is greater), writing to the Chairman and requesting a
motion of no confidence. For the avoidance of doubt, clause 6.28.1 is only applicable
in the event that the Parliamentary Party consists of more than 100 MPs; or
6.28.2. by 50% of all Members in Good Standing writing to the Chairman requesting a
motion of no confidence.
In either case such a request shall only be valid for 60 days from the day of receipt, after
that time the Chairman shall disregard such requests.

Reform UK PIP changes: Reform UK MPs vs Old Tory MPs Farage, Pochin, Anderson, Tice, vs Jenrick, Braverman, Rosindell, Kruger Having reviewed PIP data and mapped it against Reform UK constituencies, and weighted for working age claimants, it's clear that there is a divide between them.
