NYT warns US power grid vulnerable to years-long blackout

newsAug 19, 202643314

The New York Times analysis "The Blackout That Could Devastate America" warns that the United States power grid depends on thousands of aging, hand-built transformers that have long lead times for replacement, creating a vulnerability where coordinated damage could leave regions without power for 18 months to three years. The piece reports that disabling as few as nine key substations across the three interconnections could black out the entire country and that attackers with rifles could disable critical equipment in about 20 minutes. Reporters detail past raids on transformer yards where assailants “knew which cables to cut” and “knew exactly when the police were coming,” highlighting the feasibility of targeted physical attacks. The article says the supply chain and manufacturing capacity for large transformers are limited, so rebuilding damaged infrastructure would take many months to years. Officials quoted in the story say there is no comprehensive national plan for responding to a nationwide blackout. The Times outlines immediate consequences: the supply of food, water, and fuel would degrade within days, electronic transactions would stop, the economy would virtually shut down, and widespread social unrest would follow.

This is... absolute nightmare fuel. A national blackout lasting 18 months to three years. Nothing done to prevent it beforehand. It would let Trump do anything he wanted for so long—and in darkness—that America would surely awaken to a tyranny. JFC.
