Meta smartglasses linked to secret filming and school harassment

techAug 19, 2026932,664

Reporting in The Guardian says vendors such as Ghost Metas are disabling the flashing LED on Meta’s Ray-Ban and Oakley smartglasses so wearers can record without the glasses’ indicator; Ghost Metas’ operator says he has modified about 100 pairs and that each takes 15 to 20 minutes. Meta sold roughly 7 million pairs in 2025, and celebrities including Chris Hemsworth, Teyana Taylor and Kylie Jenner have promoted the product, with Jenner collaborating on a $399 ‘‘Starfire’’ model that speaks in her voice. The coverage documents multiple accounts of people being secretly recorded at home, concerts, workplaces, beaches and strip clubs, and says some men and teen boys have used the glasses to film and humiliate women, including incidents at schools. Many videos have been posted online without consent. Meta notes the LED is intended to signal recording and says the glasses will not record when the LED is blocked, while the reporting says aftermarket services and tutorials enable users to defeat that safeguard. Posts quoted in the reporting urged bans and stricter rules, including calls for schools to prohibit the glasses to prevent harassment and secret filming.

"The man I’m talking to runs a business called Ghost Metas. He’s one of hundreds of vendors, easily discoverable online, who specialise in disabling the flashing LED light embedded in Meta’s smartglasses that blinks when wearers capture photos, videos and audio" www.theguardian.com/technology/n...
