Proposed London datacentre would emit CO2 equal to 27,000 New York flights

techAug 21, 202642333

Planning documents for Digital Reef’s proposed £14.7bn East Havering Data Centre Campus in North Ockendon show the hyperscale site would emit about 1.2 million tonnes of CO2e a year, the developers’ estimate equating that to roughly 26,795 London Heathrow, New York JFK flights. The application says the campus would produce about 72 million tonnes CO2e over a 60-year lifespan, use 218 hectares of green belt and consume about 2.65 billion kWh annually, equivalent to the electricity demand of more than 1 million UK households. Digital Reef acknowledges the scheme “does not align with a science-based 1.5C compatible trajectory and achieving net zero by 2050.” The project would rely on a 600 MVA grid connection and require a new 400 kV National Grid substation and a 132 kV UK Power Networks facility, with the full connection expected by 2033. Guardian analysis found the East Havering proposal discloses higher projected emissions than any other UK datacentre developer filings reviewed. Donald Campbell, advocacy director at Foxglove, called the projected emissions “staggering,” and the North Ockendon Residents Association warned the scheme would be a “massacre” of green belt land. The scale of the emissions and planned grid upgrades intensifies questions about how rapid AI infrastructure expansion will be reconciled with the UK’s legally binding climate targets and with forecasts that datacentres’ share of UK electricity use could rise fourfold by 2030.

Just who will benefit from this dangerous monstrosity? Not me, not you, not working people, not the climate, not nature Just mega-rich corporations and their billionaire owners I suppose it will be fun to trash the place when forecast collapse comes 😊 www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
