Joe Strummer remembered on his 74th birthday
Remembering Joe Strummer on his birthday. Here’s his fantastic tape collection photographed at the Strummer Calling exhibition in 2018
Here are some close-ups for the curious. The "Gaz" tapes #1-101 in the 4th and 5th rows are sought-after compilations by Gaz Mayall of Gaz's Rockin' Blues fame. Apparently Jools Holland also has a full set. They were sold in limited numbers at places like Kensington Market
Man, I'd love to see the track lists for those tapes!
the juxtaposition of 'Drinkin' and Drivin' - that's curation
Wow, It took me 60 years to find out I have the same birthday as Joe Strummer!
Is that a full collection of Gaz Mayall cassettes up to 101?
Still not followed Me back.....🤣
Respect to the man for including CHAS AND DAVE - The Greatest Hits Live
One of the Pogues - it was either Chevron or, more likely, Finer - spoke about treasuring Strummer's mixed tapes. The track listings started in his impeccable, familiar from Clash lyric sheets, comic book handwriting and grew increasingly spidery as he got through the bottle of red wine.
Joe Strummer is exempted from all criticism ofc. But John Lydon... just turned out exactly as you'd expect
any triggered punks or ex-punks: no I do not care about your objections.
Strummer managing to be both a punk and then a bit of a hippie without sign of turning into any of the likely stereotypes is pretty extraordinary
John Lydon is a really good example of one of the worst high profile people you know is still a human being who cares for his sick wife
Been to the Joe Strummer memorial forest in Skye I think that if you have a memorial forest named after you, then its probably a good sign that you aren't a cunt
Public schoolboy who presented himself as a man of the people. Not exempt from criticism!
Lydon was always like he is now. The error was ever thinking he was something else

Happy birthday, Joe Strummer. I was talking to a gravedigger in St Woolos Cemetery yesterday, as one does, and he reckoned this famous photo wasn't taken there but at Christchurch, another cemetery in Newport.
I wore a donkey jacket for farm work until the late 80s - the wax jacket was more in vogue, but the donkey jacket was more practical. Hi-viz clothing then started to come in.
I wasn't in Newport when he was there, because I left in 1970 after school and was travelling with archaeological work until I went to Leicester in 1977.
