Zelensky leads National Flag Day ceremony in Kyiv with European leaders

President Volodymyr Zelensky led Ukraine’s National Flag Day raising ceremony in Kyiv on Sunday, Aug. 23, joined by leaders from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Norway. Zelensky highlighted the historic 1991 "Flag of Independence," calling the flag "our true amulet" and saying Russia’s 2014 and 2022 invasions are driven by a "maniacal dream" that Ukraine should not exist. The event included remarks from Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. A broad delegation of Ukraine’s leadership attended, including Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi, Presidential Office Head Kyrylo Budanov, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara, National Security and Defense Council Secretary Ihor Klymenko, and Foreign Intelligence Service Head Rustem Umerov. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha greeted the visiting delegations at Kyiv railway station earlier that morning. The Nordic and Baltic leaders arrived in Kyiv to take part in an NB8 summit and a Coalition of the Willing meeting, and their two-day visit spans Flag Day and Ukraine’s Independence Day with planned bilateral and multilateral talks with Zelensky.
