Shelley Fabares, the actor and singer best known for Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show and for later roles on One Day at a Time and Coach, died Saturday in Los Angeles at 82, her family told The Associated Press. Born in Santa Monica in 1944, Fabares began acting as a child, making her first television appearance at age 10 on The Loretta Young Show. She was a regular on The Donna Reed Show from 1958 through 1963 and scored two Top 40 hits during that period, including the No. 1 single "Johnny Angel." In the early 1960s she co-starred with Elvis Presley in Girl Happy, Spinout, and Clambake, and she later played Francine Webster on One Day at a Time and Christine Armstrong on Coach. Fabares married producer Lou Adler in 1964 and has been married to actor Mike Farrell since 1984. She survived progressive liver failure after an esophageal bleed revealed the condition in 1999 and received a liver transplant in October 2000. Her family said in a statement that she was "a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort" and that they will remember her for her kindness, loyalty, wit, courage, and beautiful spirit; no cause of death was given.
