On the eve of Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day, Ukrainian military intelligence head Kyrylo Budanov chaired the second global online meeting of Ukrainian youth organizations from around the world. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda congratulated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and pledged continued military, humanitarian and financial support, saying Lithuania will never recognise the occupation or annexation of Ukrainian territories and will support Ukraine until its victory. Nausėda said Lithuania believes Ukraine should join the European Union by 2030. Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius told Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi that Lithuania will provide political, military, economic and humanitarian support and actively contribute to Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery. The coverage recalled that Ukraine declared independence on August 24, 1991, that Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Happy 35th anniversary to Ukraine, a country I first visited when it was still part of the Soviet Union. In a single generation Ukraine has transformed itself into a symbol of bravery, resilience and independence. Ukrainians should be proud.

On Ukraine’s Independence Day, we honour the extraordinary courage of the Ukrainian people. For more than a third of its time as a sovereign nation, Ukraine has had to fight to prevent Russia from taking away its freedom. (1/3)
