Apple updates Mac mini with M6 and Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra

Apple refreshed its desktop lineup, updating the Mac mini with a new M6 chip and introducing a redesigned Mac Studio powered by M5 Max and a new M5 Ultra. The Mac Studio, announced on Apple.com, delivers up to 4.3x faster AI performance versus prior Apple silicon, up to 2x faster storage, up to 1.8x faster graphics, up to 1.3x faster CPU, and supports up to 512 GB of unified memory; M5 Max configures with an 18-core CPU and up to a 40-core GPU and up to 128 GB memory while M5 Ultra scales to a 36-core CPU and up to an 80-core GPU. Mac Studio adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thunderbolt 5, which Apple says enables clustering multiple systems for up to 3x faster distributed AI inference; Apple positioned these Macs for on‑device AI, professional creative workloads, and running large LLMs locally. Apple opened preorders for Mac Studio with availability beginning September 22. The Mac mini now ships with the M6 chip and starts at $899; press coverage and buyer notes flag that as a $100 increase over the prior base price. High-end Mac Studio configurations were reported to start at $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra, with top-spec M5 Ultra systems reaching much higher configurable memory and storage limits. Together, Apple framed the updates as focused on substantially larger local AI performance and pro connectivity for developers, researchers, and creative professionals.

As impressive as this is, you probably don't need a computer that's equivalent of a small datacenter TPU personally. This thing could *easily* power 10+ agentic Quen 3.7 users at once at max hardware config using only modest quantization for the model and the KV cache.
