CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled overnight to Moscow for unannounced meetings with Russian officials, a U.S. official told CNN. The CIA declined to comment and the U.S. official would not disclose the substance of the talks. U.S. officials asked Ukraine to pause drone and missile strikes on Moscow and other northern Russian cities from Monday through Wednesday while a senior U.S. official was in Russia, a person familiar with the matter said. A U.S. Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport appeared on flight tracking data to have landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport after an apparent departure from Joint Base Andrews; Latvian officials said the flight left Riga and was coordinated. The visit is Ratcliffe’s first publicly known trip to Russia as CIA director under President Donald Trump and lasted only hours, according to media reports that first flagged his presence. The trip comes with Ukraine-Russia peace talks stalled and one day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Operation Economic Outcast, a new U.S. strategy to isolate Iran, a country with strategic trading ties to Russia.

2/ It's not yet clear whether Ratcliffe met Putin. VChK-OGPU reports that Ratcliffe "certainly met with representatives of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), but whether he met with Putin remains unknown. Sources say Ratcliffe departed earlier than planned."

"Left earlier than planned" is usually good for Ukraine and Europe at least, because it generally means Trump didn't get what he wanted.

There was a time in the not too distant past when a visit by the Director of the C I Fookin' A to Moscow for a meeting with the FSB would have been unthinkable due to the vast amount of sensitive material in his head. Times have changed, however. Ratcliffe's head barely qualifies as a hatrack.

As the CIA Director has left Moscow, I can only conclude his visit signals that US intelligence perceives the threat that Russia is seriously preparing for an armed confrontation with a NATO member to be substantial. We are perilously close to Article 5 territory now.

With a normal government I would think the same, but with whatever this thing is I don't see it so clearly, even less so with the person Trump chose at the beginning of the legislature as director of national intelligence. This guy may have been there 4 reasons opposite to what logic would indicate.
