Andrew Garfield's new historical drama revealed as Robin Hood origin film

Paul Greengrass’s historical drama The Uprising has been rebranded with the subtitle The Rise of Robin Hood, and studio Focus Features has released new clips positioning the film as an origin story for the legendary outlaw. The film centers on Andrew Garfield as a leader who “forms an army of the people” during the 1381 Peasants' Revolt, events the official synopsis says helped inspire the Robin Hood legend. The Uprising also stars Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, and Katherine Waterson. Focus Features schedules the film to open in UK cinemas on 9 October. The announcement frames Greengrass’s project as explicitly linking the historical uprising against King Richard II to the creation of the Robin Hood story, a marketing shift from earlier descriptions that focused on the revolt itself. The change places this film alongside other contemporary Robin Hood projects, including an MGM+ Robin Hood series preparing a second season, increasing the property’s visibility this year.
